About this deal

I would have liked to see native wireless Android Auto support. You can install Android Auto on the Android OS side of the platform, but alongside the floating controls, it can be cumbersome and confusing to work around it and it’s not as good as a native solution. It has great Wi-Fi specs that make it a solid performer for wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and its HDMI output port allows you to connect it to an external HDMI display.

Only 1 finalist didn’t support any secondary Bluetooth connections, whilst the rest supported at least a Bluetooth remote control connection, and 6 offered both remote and Bluetooth game controller support.

As the cheapest of the top 5 AI Boxes, this AI Box is a good all-rounder with solid foundations. It’s fast to boot as well as launch wireless CarPlay. It gets the job done without any fuss or frills. So if you’re on a budget, and you’re looking for speed and reliability, you can’t go wrong with this AI Box. 2. Ottocast Picasou 2 Pro CarPlay AI Box

So if you’re after a 2-in-1 adapter with video casting, this adapter stands out above the rest. 4. Ottocast U2-X Pro 2-in-1 Adapter This adapter simply takes the best elements from both of the two adapters in my top 5 wireless CarPlay adapters round up, and simply adds Android Auto support. As a result, this adapter is fast to boot and pair adapter for wireless CarPlay, and it comes in just 4 seconds slower than the fastest booting adapter for Android Auto. Transform your standard Carplay into the ultimate entertainment centre with the New Android 13 Pro by Tech Wizard! The MMB Android AI Box is a great new dongle for CarPlay that replaces CarPlay with the Android OS system, to allow you to use Google Android apps and games on your CarPlay display, such as YouTube, NetFlix, Prime Video to even games like Candy Crush and many more. I then score each of their launcher software. These varied between basic dated-looking menus, with floating sub-menu buttons, to more modern designs with large functional widget panels. It’s the second fastest to boot into its launcher menu, and the second fastest to boot into CarPlay. It only supports a Bluetooth remote and it has an average speed in launching the four key apps. Only 4 of the 11 finalists offered video casting support, with varying performance. The same number offered HDMI output to display content onto a separate screen, and just 1 offered HDMI input to allow the use of stream boxes or game consoles on your CarPlay display.

I connect the MMB Max to my Pioneer 93DAB CarPlay receiver in my demo pod, and the MMB Max started up with an initial boot animation sequence before resting on its main home screen interface. The total boot-up time took 31 seconds, which sits on the faster end of all the AI boxes I have tested. You’ll need a USB Flash Drive to load the update files onto the MMB Android AI Box, so below you will find some recommended drives, if you don’t have one. Connecting to Android Auto was more reliable on the Nifty Box, but once in Android Auto, it had the same lower resolution on the high-definition display of the Pioneer compared to how it can display on other capable AI Box adapters. So in light of this, I would not recommend this adapter for Android Auto use unless your system resolution is also low. CarPlay on the other hand performed fine, and like the MMB Max, you can configure the AI Box to auto-launch into CarPlay after its initial boot sequence. I tested recording an audio message via Siri, which sounded good enough as any AI Box, and it didn’t distort or increase the volume in any way.

All finalised supported wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. So I tested the time it took to pair and display each platform, testing their input and audio lag. Only a few finalists had USB-A ports, but neither offered wired CarPlay or Android Auto support. Each finalist used a variety of CarPlay and Android auto connectivity apps, from the more feature-rich Zlink5 app with support for split-screen mode in Android Auto and HD streaming options to more basic apps from MultiPlay, SpeedLink, and AutoKit, some of these offered the ability to choose your own custom home app icon in CarPlay. And finally, I looked at their price, including any available sales or coupons. Averaging out their cost I compared each dongle’s cost to how they performed in each previous test to give an idea of how much value they offer. My Top 5 2-in-1 Apple CarPlay Adapters So when you also factor in its relatively high price tag, I find it can’t quite compete against the remaining top three finalists when you compare what this adapter offers you for its price. One feature it does offer over the other finalists was a high-resolution CarPlay display. So if your CarPlay system has a high-resolution display, this adapter will take full advantage of that and offer more app icons per screen. 3. Herilary C3 2-in-1 Adapter What JoyeAuto have done with this new dongle, is to merge these two dongle functionalities together to offer you an Android OS, that’s also been upgraded to Android 9.0, and it now offers the ability to swap the dongle to wireless CarPlay mode and also allow your iPhone to communicate with your wired CarPlay system, wirelessly. If you have a factory Apple CarPlay system, this is the simplest and cheapest way to run Android Auto on your vehicle. If you also use your car with both iOS and Android devices, or you just want to convert your system from wired to wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, these adapters are great solutions to achieve this too. 6 Wireless 2-in-1 Apple CarPlay Adapters Tested

I tried a number of Bluetooth devices and peripherals, but I couldn’t connect to an ODBII device, and I was only able to get my alternative Bluetooth remote to work with it successfully, which the MMB Max could not. NiftyCity also sells a similar Bluetooth remote with an integrated keyboard, which makes it easier for browsing and text input. My Impressions In the box you get the Android AI Box itself, all in its new blue-striped colour scheme. You also get a GPS module, antenna and fuse power cable should your car not come equipped with GPS to support the AI Box. There’s a bundled USB type-A to type-C braided cable to connect to your car’s CarPlay USB port, and if your CarPlay port uses USB-C you can choose to have a USB type-C to type-C cable shipped to you as well. I then ran each dongle on my Pioneer 93DAB car stereo, which is a wired and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto aftermarket receiver. This is to test if the adapter is more versatile and compatible than any other adapter that simply will not work on this receiver. If any didn’t work, they were eliminated too. YouTube and Netflix apps ran fine and smoothly with no significant or obvious drops in frames or audio being out of sync. The picture in picture mode is also present here like most other AI Boxes. On top, there is a large Nifty Box logo and there is a status indicator light which glows whilst the adapter is powered. Underneath there are lots of passive cooling holes and in the middle, there’s a silver-coloured metal heatsink plate to help keep the main SOC cool.Like the original AI Box, I still think having the option to move the floating onscreen controls to a fixed area to the side or bottom of the screen would greatly improve the useability of using Android on the CarPlay display. Because between using different apps, they can so easily get in the way and you can sometimes miss hit these controls when trying to select something else nearby. Like all AI boxes, you need to give this AI Box an internet connection, via either a Wi-Fi hotspot, tethering to your mobile phone Wi-Fi hotspot, or by using the internal data SIM card slot to give its own internet connection. I tried calling from this adapter and although there is a phone app, it can’t call from an inserted SIM card, instead, it will call from your connected device over Bluetooth. YouTube & Netflix Like the Ultra, it offers dual Bluetooth support for both wireless remote and game controllers, and again, thanks to its optimisations, it was the fastest to boot into all of the 4 test apps including Spotify, Google Maps, Youtube and Netflix. This menu system is one of the better-looking interfaces on an AI Box right now with a choice of three main layouts, with the ability to customise and move the main top row of panels to your liking, and along the bottom, there are two buttons on the left to go to the home screen and invoke the Google assistant, followed by four favourite apps of your choosing, and on the right-hand side there is the time, date, and small status bar icons, that when tapped act as a shortcut to go into the adapter’s preference pane.
